We often hear website owners say that they need their site to “start generating more business” before they spend more money on it. What they fail to do is put any effort into marketing their site to draw in visitors, or update their site with new and relevant information that will be of interest to site visitors, or have a compelling offer.

I recently read an article in NZ Marketing magazine by a well-known New Zealand marketing professional that said “Understand the market of your clients. If their target market is middle-aged decision-makers, these people simple are not going to be on Facebook, Twitter or even Linked-In for business.”
Personally, I have made a great many business connections through Twitter. I connect with business professionals on a daily basis and feel privileged to be able to ask for their knowledge, expertise and advice – which they often freely give.
Many of these people own their own business. In my mind, that makes the majority of these people the key decision makers.

Good graphic design is a balance between aesthetics and meeting specific marketing/sales goals. What it isn’t is pretty or clever design for the sake of winning creative awards or satisfying the designer’s ego. In fact, at the risk of being shunned by other designers, if it came to a coin toss between looking good or selling more product, then I’d come down on the side of sales every time.
