Getting your marketing budget to work for you in 2010 – not against you

2009 is over – its time to make way for success in 2010

The past year has been a real experience for all of us in small business. But what are we going to do to ensure next year is a year to keep the accountants (and us!) smiling?

Attention-Grabbing Advertising

While we’re on the subject of what’s going on right outside our office, while I was taking the photos of the Christchurch Sky Lens for my last post, my cousin, Doug, called me and said “Meet you outside your office. Grab a camera.” Then rocked up in this great wee motor!

Doug is currently tasked with driving this mean machine around Christchurch while passing out flyers for Hotel So saying “Why taxi when you can stay at Hotel SO”.

[Christchurch Hotel So Car Promo] The mini road trip seems to be working well so far. While I stood with him, at least 8 people approached and asked what the story was.

This is reflective of a lot of marketing today. Businesses need to stir up some interest and give people a reason to make contact. In this case, instead of walking up to someone and forcing a flyer into their hands, people are actively stopping Doug in the street and even taking flyers directly from his wee glove box.

According to an article on Stuff.co.nz the lens is …

It is part of the City Mall revitalisation project and supported by Christchurch’s Public Art Advisory Group, which jointly funded the $140,000 project.

… and will be lit up at night which will look pretty impressive (but I hope it doesn’t ruin the view of the stars!). I hope that traffic cone isn’t there to stop it landing on people’s heads.

When the product doesn’t match the promise

Most women know that when they buy a cosmetic, its not going to turn them into the smooth faced adolescent that is pictured in the advertising. The reality is that it doesn’t matter how much ‘Meaningful Beauty’ I slap on, I’m never gonna look like Cindy Crawford! But we still buy into these false promises, [...]

How to improve the effectiveness of your ads

Have you ever had a call from a magazine salesperson offering a cut price deal on advertising to fill space in their magazine? The deal seems really good; their readers are your target audience, and they are offering it for hundreds of dollars instead of the usual thousands for a full page ad.  It is [...]
