Hot Cross Bun Taste Test – #1
Brand/Baker: Trocadero Family Bakeries, Cashel Street, Christchurch.
Price: $1.70 each or $8.00 per 1/2 dozen
Ingredients: Not available
Appearance: Nice size and shape, plump looking, perfect crosses on the top. One of our tasters thought his bun was well browned on the top while another lamented the lack of glazing. When broken open the bun appeared slightly stodgy, not springy. Others described it as ‘dense’ or ‘soft leaning towards doughy’.
Our Ranking: 3/5
Smell: Spicy (not highly) and doughy, but not yeasty.
Our Ranking: 2/5
Amount of Fruit: Moist sultanas of medium size. Comments ranged from ‘sparse’ to ‘clumped together’.
Our Ranking: 2/5
Size: Good big size.
Our Ranking: 4/5
Taste: When eaten ‘straight’ with no accompaniments, it was described as ‘bland’ by two taste testers, and another tasted cinnamon but described it as ‘chewy’. All experienced an aftertaste described as ‘sharp and lingering’ or of ‘fruit and cinnamon’. When toasted and spread with butter the taste was described by all as bland.
Our Ranking: 2/5
