Hot Cross Bun Taste Test – #2
Brand/Baker: Coupland’s Bakeries, Hereford Street, Christchurch.
Price: $3.09 per pack of 6.
Ingredients: Wheat flour, water, currents, sultanas, sugar, gluten, yeast, modified starch (1420), vegetable oil, mixed spice, salt, soya flour, skim milk powder, emulsifiers (471, 48, 472e, 322 (soy)), flour improvers (170, 300, 516), acidity regulators (263, 260, 330), flavour (almond oil), preservative (202).
Appearance: Misshapen, crosses a bit ‘random’. No glaze. Look like they have lots of fruit from the outside of the buns. Inside has a stodgy texture, not springy. Dark colour of dough suggests lots of spice.
Our Ranking: 2/5
Smell: Quite spicy and slightly ‘eggie’.
Our Ranking: 3/5
Amount of Fruit: Loads of small sultanas and currents, well distributed throughout the buns.
Our Ranking: 4/5
Size: Medium size.
Our Ranking: 3/5
Taste: Lots of spicy flavour, perhaps a bit overpowering. When toasted on the inside and eaten with butter the flavours seemed more intense and the dough became stodgy in comparison to the toasted surface.
Our Ranking: 3.5/5
Value for Money: A great buy for keeping at home to munch on but not something we’d bring out to impress the rellies with.
Our Ranking: 4/5
