Search for the Best Hot Cross Buns in Town – Summary

We’ve just completed our review of 10 different Hot Cross Buns from suppliers around town.  Apart from being totally ‘over’ hot cross buns before it is even Easter, we have discovered a lot of average buns out there. And it doesn’t seem to matter whether the buns are mass produced, bought from a supermarket or come from a small bakery.

Here’s our summary, with each rated out of a top score of 5:

4.0   Copenhagen Bakery Hot Cross Buns (Test #3)
3.5   MacKenzie Highcountry Traditional Hot Cross Buns (Test #4)
3.5   Sydenham Bakery Hot Cross Buns (Test #7)
3.0   Brumby’s Hot Cross Buns (Test #10)
3.0   Coupland’s  Bakeries Hot Cross Buns (Test #2)
2.5   Quality Bakers Hot Cross Buns (Test #9)
2.5   KB’s Bakery Hot Cross Buns (Test #8)
2.5   Bakers Delight Hot Cross Buns (Test #6)
2.5   Tip Top Cafe Style Hot Cross Buns(Test #5)
2.0   Trocadero Family Bakeries Hot Cross Buns (Test #1)

For a special treat you can’t go past our top scoring buns from award winning bakers Copenhagen (no, they didn’t pay us to say this!).

Second choice, if you are on a budget, is the MacKenzie Highcountry Traditional Hot Cross Buns bought from New World. They must be popular because I went to by some more recently and there were none left!

Happy Easter!

(Perhaps next year we’ll review chocolate eggs – and cure us forever from craving chocolate! )

  1. Just one question. Where is Copenhagen Bakery??

  2. Their shop is 119 Armagh Street, Christchurch. Not far from the Pricewaterhouse building.
